Spinal Disc Disorders
The spine is made up of bones called vertebrae. Inside the vertebrae are special discs that act as shock absorbers for the spine. The discs are made up of soft jelly-like material and have a tough outer shell to help them hold their shape. Because of the many stresses sustained by the lower back and neck, and changes due to aging, the discs in the spine begin to deteriorate. This can cause problems such as bulging, herniations, or pinched nerves.
- When one or more of the spinal discs break down, it can lead to lower back pain, leg pain, numbness, and weakness. After the initial swelling goes away, it may cause a tingly type of sensation. That is called paresthesia.
- A pinched nerve in the neck can lead to pain, numbness, and tingling in the arms and hands. This is caused when a disc in the neck moves or bulges.
Medical professionals do not always agree on the causes of pain related to the spinal disc, and patients understandably have a hard time understanding this complex – and often not well explained – medical topic. Considering those facts, it is easier to understand why you may feel uncertain about what steps to take, or where to turn for help.
There also tends to be confusion due to the many terms used interchangeably to describe a spinal disc problem, such as a pinched nerve, degenerated disc, slipped disc, herniated disc, bulging disc, and so on.
While disc conditions are often referred to in a variety of ways, but when it comes to treating disc problems, there are only two distinct categories: degenerative disc disease and herniated discs.
Herniated Discs
Herniated discs are one of the most common types of disc injury. The staff at Zia Chiropractic is specially trained to treat issues with herniated discs and will help you create an individualized treatment plan that, if followed correctly, will get you on your road to healing.
Degenerative Disc Disease
Degenerative Disc Disease is not an actual disease. In plain English, the term degenerative disc disease refers to the normal wear and tear of the spine with age. The majority of patients diagnosed with degenerative disc disease do not experience long-term disabilities and can be treated using non-surgical, chiropractic treatments. If you have back pain due to degenerative disc disease, then the professionals at Zia Chiropractic can help. After a thorough evaluation, we will develop a personalized treatment plan to help you relieve back pain, increase your range of motion, reduce inflammation and improve your overall health.
We're here to get you on the path back to recovery.
